The Underground Railroad is Back...Shhh, Don't Tell Nobody: Dr. Syb Bennett at TEDxNashville

05/05/2013 23:01:24

One of the most effective, innovative and disruptive networks in US history reappears to virtually address freedom, access, boundaries and ownership issues in the 21st century. After all, isn't the present being compromised, by dragging the past into the future? Dr. Syb shares her Seven Elements of Innovation to comparatively analyze the UGRR to the Internet as history virtually collides in real time. As people all over the world continue the fight for independence, equity and justice, lessons from the UGRR are more applicable than ever. Got your ticket? Get on Board!

Dr. Sybril Bennett, affectionately known as "Dr. Syb," is a Vanderbilt-educated, Harvard-trained, two-time Emmy award-winning multimedia journalist, and a proud TEDxNashville board member. She is an Associate Professor of Journalism at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee where she helped to establish the New Century Journalism Program in 2003. With more than 20 years of experience in television news, she's worked behind the scenes at ABC in Milwaukee and at CBS in Chicago. Her last television gig was at CBS in Nashville where she was a general assignment reporter, fill-in anchor and fill-in talk show host. She has been commissioned by the American Association of Colleges and Universities to participate in the Bridge to Theory and Practice monograph project.

Her focus is civic engagement and social media. Her book in press, "Innovate: Lessons from the Underground Railroad" examines the Underground Railroad and the Internet as among America's most effective, innovative and disruptive networks. Dr. Syb is a disruptive facilitator, mentor and speaker spreading the word about and through social media.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* *Subject to certain rules and regulations

Very captivating discussion. I like the 4 points of comparison-freedom, access, boundaries, and privacy. And of course this issue is becoming more relevant every day as technology evolves. Where can "Innovate: Lessons From The Underground Railroad" be purchased?
