TEDxNUS - Debunking myths about evolution - John van Wyhe

07/03/2011 10:12:02

In an enlightening and scientifically motivated talk, Dr. John van Wyhe states that the popular narrative attached to Darwin and his discoveries are wide off the mark. Dr van Wyhe tells us why it is important to hear the true story behind Darwin and his work to understand their scientific and human significance. In a logical manner, we are shown where certain premises attached to the popular narrative fail when brought under a strict scientific scrutiny. The matter regarding the age of the Earth is settled, the progressive nature of the history of the Earth is highlighted and this leads to Darwin's idea of Evolution. According to Dr van Wyhe, Darwin states three reasons for his theory of evolution - the existence of fossilized mammals, patterns linked to geographical distribution and the Galapagos Islands which served as a hotbed for a unique diaspora of different species. The accumulated effect of these observations - natural selection, or as Dr van Wyhe puts it "The Gauntlet of Death" - showcased the accuracy and simplicity of Darwin's observations. With interesting excerpts and his own observations Dr van Wyhe paints a portrait of Darwin and the theory of evolution that comes to a logical conclusion.

This guy is a fake. Did his "tiny changes from generation to generation" bring about the origin of the human brain? And hearts, lungs, ball and socket joints, human intelligence, the intelligence that he is using to fool the TED audience? The intelligence they are using to be fooled? The origin of species is nothing but a smokescreen used to fool intelligent people into NOT wondering how organs and biological systems originated. The origin of species is chump change compared to the origin of organs and bio-systems. His accent makes him seem so smart. But is he fooled? Does he know he is fooling his audience? He is the equivalent of a charlatan evangelist who fools HIS audience. He does so successfully, judging from the rousing clapping by the fooled audience. The debate isn't over by a long shot. It wasn't over twenty years after Darwin. The debate is far bigger since Watson and Crick. Evolution needs to account for protein synthesis, and it doesn't have the slightest chance of doing that. Saying the debate is over is not thinking. It's exactly the same as "blind faith" in religion.

America needs to get educated and follow Europe into the 21st Century. As a result you will become secular and more enlightened. If you persist with your religious delusion your country and culture will be doomed. It is the religious within your society who are preventing advancement morally, legally, biologically, scientifically and you are falling behind the rest of the world now. Ridiculed for producing a thick, wilfully dense society that believes the earth is 6000 years old and that supernatural myths are taken as reality. Your civilisation will crumble. Just like all the other failed civilisations.

I am concerned that you and your middle eastern whacko friends will trigger all out war to end the world. After all, most of you are ignorant and not intelligent enough to know what a self full filling prophecy is.

He fails to prove how one living thing of one kind can evolve into another completely separate living thing of another kind. this is because it is impossible to prove, especially with the scientific method which requires observation of a thing happening. maybe it will be proven another million years from now as we have documentation of what is alive now, but i doubt it.

Another bogus attempt to prove evolution.

This guy failed to mention Mendells work with genetics which culminated in the law of genetics - including the law of genetic entropy that completely disproved the darwinian theory of genes becoming more complex in order to 'evolve'.

He also failed to point out how ridiculous it has been for the scientific community to embrace darwins theory in such a wholehearted manner.

He must have been lecturing kids or something.

For goodness sakes. Next time just zoom out so you can fit him, the stage and the background images into the shot, instead of trying to chase him around every time he walks out of the shot. That was so annoying

Darwin online is an incredible resource, but there is one thing that is misleading about this talk, and that's that while Origin of Species clinched the case for evolution, it didn't clinch it for natural selection. Peter Bowler's Monkey Trials and Gorilla Sermons explains this. People calling themselves Darwinists before about 1900 simply meant "evolutionists," but without the discovery of genetics, the mechanism of evolution was still up for debate.
