Daring To Teach: Lisa Endersby at TEDxUTSC

11/02/2013 16:08:04

Lisa Endersby has always had a problem with standing still. Dancing her way between adventures, Lisa is just about obsessed with learning -- both for herself and for the students she works with. A voracious reader from a young age, she balances living in her own head with externally processing anything and everything with anyone and everyone. Taking on the title of 'Advocate for Awesome', her work in higher education spans defining and chasing student success in leadership development, career services, community engagement and, her most recent love, assessment.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* *Subject to certain rules and regulations

Even the most advanced of ‘experts’ has little imagination since, they possess only one focus – changing the opinions of others to suit theirs.Such experts always argue from the point of view that only people who are as well educated as them could possibly understand what they are saying. Members of this class, typically academics of one sort or another, tend to talk condescendingly about what they think they know more about than anyone else, and not to those who seek real guidance from them.

I think you need to watch the video one more time. She is actually trying to empower students to be the teachers. She isn't against communicating facts, knowledge, or analysis - she is actually encouraging the teaching of the PROCESS behind the finding of facts, acquiring of knowledge, and formulation of analysis.

Anyone who thinks sitting in a university can make you an intellectual must also think that sitting in a baker's can make you a cake.

'My blog...my twitter...my facebook...' Stop staring at your laptopmobile...get in the classroom!! This woman and her like have become so convinced that educators know what is best for students that they clearly forget that students themselves are the real experts. In her hands the concept of education seems almost like a dirty idea and that communicating facts, knowledge, analysis is elitist. This is not to say she has lost the plot. Rather, that she never knew one existed.
