Thats why I like my religion Islam so much, because at the very center of it lies the concept of "ikhlas" which is do every good for sake of pleasing your Creator. Other people are participants of the test just like you. "Riya" is the act of doing something for public approval and is highly warned against. There were people who went to extreme and publicly humiliated themselves to make sure that everyone thinks bad of them so that they are completely free of "Riya". That is extreme of course, our Prophet never advised such act. But is shows you how central is that concept to Islam. At the same time in order to please your Creator you should be as much helpful to his creation and show mercy as you can. But your intention is only pleasing the Creator. Quran 76:8-9 "And they give food, out of their love for Him Allah, to the needy, and the orphan, and the captive, Saying to them, “We feed you only for the sake of Allah; we have no intention of receiving either a return from you or thanks.
