Cyber security | Jesse Hurley | TEDxReno

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The greatest risk to the US today is an attack on critical infrastructure systems like the electric grid, the natural gas pipeline system, and water supplies. An attack on the electric grid resulting in grid failure would cost millions of American lives. Cyber warfare has laid bare US infrastructure, and it will take a national effort the size of a new Manhattan Project to put the country on a proper footing.

Jesse is co-founder and CEO of Shift Systems, LLC and co-inventor on over 100 pending and issued US utility and provisional patent applications in network security, cloud computing, and the novel use of deployable, intelligent software agents. In a prior startup, he led design and deployment of the first-in-industry push-based content distribution network, delivering live video simulcasting for a multi-billion dollar private enterprise. Jesse’s insights into advanced cybersecurity threats to critical infrastructure enabled his selection as Board Member and Chair of the Critical Infrastructure Committee of the North American Energy Standards Board NAESB, an electric and gas utility industry standards setting body.

During his work with Shift Systems, he has briefed the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, the Senate Commerce Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Energy and Commerce Committee on matters relating to urgent threats to the national power grid. His work at Shift Systems has engaged the Department of Homeland Security in new research programs to protect critical infrastructure. Jesse attended the Worcester Polytechnic Institute on a merit scholarship from DARPA via the the Office of Naval Research where he double majored in organic chemistry and physics with a minor in international studies.
