LGBT Youth Homelessness and Survival Sex | Tiffany Graham | TEDxUSD

05/12/2015 21:25:54

LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender youths often face daily social stigma, discrimination, and often rejection by their families, in many cases this can lead to them being kicked out on their homes and forced to live on the streets. Some turn to survival sex just to be able to get by, but they still face charges of prostitution. Tiffany Graham, dean of the University of South Dakota law school, calls for a change in policy toward youth homelessness and survival sex.

Tiffany C. Graham joined the University of South Dakota of Law in 2014 as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, she was previously the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and a Professor of Law at the University of La Verne College of Law, and an Assistant Professor of Law at Villanova University School of Law. Dean Graham has taught in the areas of Constitutional Law, Race and the Law, Criminal Procedure, Law and Sexuality, and Torts. Prior to entering the academy, she clerked for the Honorable Richard W. Roberts of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and spent several years working as a commercial litigator for a major Los Angeles law firm. Dean Graham's scholarly works have focused on marriage equality and its relationship to developments in equal protection and fundamental rights jurisprudence, and her work has appeared in various publications.

Great talk Prof. Graham!! I like very much your thinking about how to redress exploitation and duress among young emerging adults. The term "emerging adults" is a great one to consider for those persons between 18-25. Congratulations!

Wonderful discussion. Now that I am 50 years old and stable I look back to the time when I was on the streets as a young, disowned, gay man of 21, newly diagnosed with HIV, on the streets of Boston with 70 dollars to my name which buys at best 3 days shelter with no food. Sex for money was no choice, it was the only real avenue I had until I could even begin to find social services or even know what that meant. And as much as that time was dark it showed me the reality of life harshly but efficiently. It was also at this time when I was assaulted as a gay man and I carry the car to this day. Being the victim of an assault with a 2x4 to the face, I was the one that was arrested for bleeding on the cops. The pressures faced by the homeless are daunting, upward mobility is EXTREMELY hard to accomplish but even more so for gay and lesbian youths that are homeless, especially when they get a police record.Nice talk and food for thought.
